June 3, 5:00 p.m. or June 17, 5:00 p.m.: Western – a slow-burning thriller that adapts the Western genre to the discontent of contemporary Europe. German, English subtitles.

“The Germans are sent to a region that should be comprehensible to them — they’re still in the EU, after all — but over which they struggle to assert their superiority.”

A slow-burning thriller, Western follows German construction workers installing a hydroelectric plant in rural Bulgaria. Tensions mount when bold newcomer Meinhard begins mixing with the local villagers. The two groups share a troubled history: Can they learn to trust each other—or is the stage being set for a showdown? Writer-director Valeska Grisebach has been widely praised for her skill at adapting the Western genre to the discontent of contemporary Europe.
