    Dear Members and Friends of Houston-Leipzig,

    Happy New Year to all of you. For our first member meeting in 2020, we are fortunate to have our very own board member Dr. Klaus Weissenberger as our guest speaker. At our meeting on Thursday, January 9, 2020, Professor Weissenberger will present Who really is the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood? The principles and function of the classic German Fairy Tales. Come to learn why fairy tales from very different cultures have similar plots and also why some of the most familiar fairy tales are totally misunderstood.

    Annual Meeting – Election of Directors and Officers

    We will also have an annual meeting and elect directors and officers for the 2020/2021 terms. A list of candidates will be sent shortly.

    Please join us in welcoming Dr. Weissenberger on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at 6:30 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Boulevard, Houston, TX 77005. The lecture and discussion will be in English.

    Professor Klaus Weissenberger

    Dr. Klaus Weissenberger is Professor of German Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he has taught since 1971. The author of four books, several of which have opened up and shaped entire fields of literary scholarship, he also published 83 articles and book chapters. Over a span of seventeen years, Weissenberger was chair of the Department of German Studies six different times. He served as Master of Hanszen College and also directed the Goethe Center for Central European Studies at Rice. In 2019, he was nominated for Rice University’s 2019 Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, Teaching and Service.

    Meeting Logistics on January 9, 2020

    Registration will begin at 6:15 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., our customary food and beverage reception will begin in the Parish Hall, and at 7:00 p.m. we will have a brief business meeting. The program starts immediately afterwards.

    Parking is available at the Rice University parking lot off Greenbriar across the street from the church for a nominal fee, credit card required. Meeting fees to cover the cost of renting the room and the food and beverages are: $20 for nonmembers, $15 for members, and $10 for students.

    Please RSVP to angelika@houstonleipzig.org and kathy@houstonleipzig.org as soon as possible so that we can plan properly for the reception. We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday evening.
