Come and Hear About the Exciting Early Beginnings of Houston-Leipzig!
Date: Saturday, January 22, 2022
Time: 11:30 a.m. CST
Dear Members and Friends of Houston-Leipzig,
Remember the Peaceful Revolution beginning in Leipzig on October 9, 1989, and the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989? After the opening of eastern Germany, a young student from Leipzig received an invitation from the American Embassy (or was it the CIA?) to visit the United States. This visit culminated years later in the signing of the Houston-Leipzig relationship at the Sister City International conference in Houston in 1993. The bond formed between the citizens of these two cities is vibrant and alive to this day, and spans the terms of Mayors Lehmann-Grube to Burkhard Jung in Leipzig and from Mayors Kathy Whitmire and Bob Lanier to Sylvester Turner in Houston.
This is your opportunity to hear how it came all about from Dr. Stefan Roehrbein, Wolfgang Schmidt, and Angelika Schmidt-Lange, who were instrumental in the formation of Houston-Leipzig.
Was there really a cloak-and-dagger meeting with a carnation in the lapel? Did you know that former German President Richard von Weizsaecker and popular former Consul General Dr. Klaus Aurisch were influential in bringing about this relationship, and that the Friendship Exchange between Rotarians from Houston and Leipzig brought critical mass to the citizen supporters on both sides? Were you with the first Buergerreise with Mayor Lehmann-Grube or at the welcome party in Houston (followed by many more)?
